What this form is for

U.S. Individual Income Tax Return (1040). The annual federal income tax return for individuals. Everything else — schedules, credits, additional forms — attaches to it.

Deadline. 15 April for the previous calendar year, unless that falls on a weekend or holiday. Form 4868 buys six more months to file, but not to pay.

Who needs it

US citizens and residents whose income passes the filing threshold for their status and age, and anyone claiming a refund of tax already withheld.

When you do not need it

If your income is under the threshold and nothing was withheld, there may be nothing to file — but filing anyway is how refundable credits are claimed, so it is often worth doing regardless.

How to fill it in

Open the file in the Quire editor. Existing form fields become editable straight away; on a flat scan you can drop your own text boxes, checkboxes and dates exactly where they belong. Sign it with the Sign tool — draw, type or upload your signature — then export.

Everything happens in your browser. A tax or immigration form carries enough personal information that it has no business sitting on somebody else's server, and here it never does.

What goes wrong

  1. An extension extends the filing date, not the payment date. Interest runs on unpaid tax from April regardless.
  2. Taxpayers over 65 may prefer 1040-SR, which is the same return set in larger type with a standard-deduction chart.

Where it goes

Follow the address or e-file route printed in the current IRS instructions for this form. Those change between tax years, so check the instructions rather than reusing last year’s envelope.
