What this form is for
Petition for Alien Relative (I-130). A petition establishing that a family relationship to a US citizen or permanent resident exists. It is the first step, not the application for a green card.
Who needs it
US citizens and permanent residents petitioning for a relative.
How to fill it in

What goes wrong
- Approval of an I-130 does not grant status or a visa. Whether the relative can then adjust status or must go through consular processing depends on category and priority date.
- Waiting times differ enormously by relationship and country of birth. Check the Visa Bulletin before making plans.
Where it goes
Submit it to the address or online portal named in the agency’s current instructions. Sending an application to a superseded address is one of the most common causes of delay.
